New Hyde Park Memorial goes pink

 

New Hyde Park Memorial High School kicked off its second annual “Pink October” with a Pink Mile walk on Sept. 29.  

Organized by teacher Katie Kaspar, “Pink October” brings awareness to breast cancer and raises money for the American Cancer Society and the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

“My idea for the Pink Mile came after last year’s Pink October success,” Mrs. Kaspar said. “I thought it would be a great way to kick off Pink October 2017 by bringing the entire school community together for an afternoon.”  

Admission to the walk was the purchase of pink breast cancer awareness shoelaces. In all, the school sold 400 pairs! Many items were donated to be raffled at the event, including a pink bicycle with basket, a flat-screen TV and an Amazon Echo. Other items raffled were a pink candy basket from Bob Howards and pizza gift certificates.  

Mrs. Kaspar thanked the Key Club and adviser Lisa Bocchino for their help with shoelace sales and setup. She also expressed her gratitude to colleagues Christine Vosswinkel-Blum, Danielle Psaros and the Student Council, who manned the cotton candy machine, which was donated by an NHP family. She also extended a special thanks to the school’s cheerleaders, who were on hand to cheer on the walkers, and the tech crew and stage crew for supplying music.  

“I also thank the amazing faculty, staff and students I’m so fortunate to work with every day,” Mrs. Kaspar said. “The outpouring of generosity for breast cancer awareness is outstanding. It makes me so hopeful and confident that we will find a cure someday!”

Throughout October, the school will host a variety of events, such as Pink it Up Day, Paint for a Cure and a Pieces of Energy Fundraiser to benefit Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Students in the art department will also display breast cancer awareness artwork.
